Spanish Mosque
Hyderabad city has long been associate eclectic mixture of folks and
cultures from Central Asia, Iran, Arabia, and geographical region. This extends
to food, design, living customs, language, and, of course, the heat and relaxed
quality that's generally Hyderabadi. However, there are nice treasures waiting
to be unearthed in several corners of the town. The Spanish masjid is one in
all them. This stunning masjid in Hyderabad is additionally known as the masjid
of the Moors due to the Moorish form of design that's not found anyplace else
in india. The development of the masjid started below the orders of
Vikar-ul-Umra, Iqbal ud Dowla, below the rule of Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali Khan
Bahadur. The development was completed by his elder son nawab sultan Ul Mulk
Bahadur. This mosque has 2 different names mosque Iqbal Ud Daula and
Aiwan-E-Begumpet. The planning of the masjid is inspired by the
Cathedral-Mosque of Córdoba in spain. Its Quranic verses carved on the walls.
The foremost attention-grabbing feature is that the spires rather than the
standard circular domes that provide the masjid a church-like look.
Popularly called the ‘Spanish masjid,’ the building is believed to
have been constructed under the orders of Vikar-ul-Umra, Iqbal ud Dowla in
1906. under the rule of Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Bahadur, who dominated from
1869-1911, the chief Council of 5 ministers – among whom were Salar jung,
Shams-ul-Umra (1846-1849), Asman Jah, Khurshed Jah, and Vikar-ul-Umra Iqbal ud
Dowla (1894-1900) – shaped the forefront of administration. These ministers
shaped the next tier within the hierarchy as Paigah nobles, joined to the
Nizam’s family through wedding and recipients of titles like Shams-ul-Umra and
Vikar-ul-Umra. Since these titles were hereditary in nature, they repeat over 2
centuries, generally creating the individuals’ specific names tough to place.
The masjid authorities have erected a shamiyana (cloth tent)
before of the masjid, covering the pathway to the doorway. The most prayer room
is flanked by 2 side rooms that are connected through French windows. On a
decent day, this masjid will host around 2000 individuals. There is, amazingly,
no space for ablutions; it's, instead, replaced by a brick drinking water stall. Legend
ties this masjid to the ‘Moorish’ style, derived from the Iberian Peninsula,
and based on the samples of hybrid architecture that dot historical Spain:
Roman engineering, basilica halls, and aspects of ‘Islamic’ design like
minarets, qibla walls, mihrab, and maqsuras.
It is believed that Iqbal ud Dowla, on an overseas tour of Europe,
came across certain monuments that enthralled him, or that he had carried
pictures of sites that he wished to re-invent in his country. It’s apparent
that the weather are starkly completely different as compared to different
mosques in Hyderabad city. Placed close to James Street, the principal business and
general business road of Secunderabad, this space must have been a lively
center of activity. It is
also believed that this masjid was a part of the grand estate of the Paigah
noble, including seven palaces cover 1600 acres: the Paigah Palace,
Aiwan-e-Vicar, that consists of the Mardana Palace (presently the us
Consulate!) and the Zenana Palace (which are currently regenerate into malls,
function halls, clubs and tourist sites), and the more standard Falaknuma
Palace, some distance away.
